Today

That’s sounds hokey, I know, but it’s true.  I’m grateful for today.

By most standards, today was quite an ordinary one: a little work, some research and prep for a client project, a little exercise, some time with friends, a few errands.  These mundane building blocks of life whirl by without much notice most of the time.  One bright day filled with sunshine floats into another and another and I forget that it seems like its been raining for months.  I go on a great hike and forget when a hamstring pull kept me sidelined for weeks.

If I’m not careful, the good times exist only in comparison to the bad ones. That doesn’t seem quite right.  I don’t want to complain about the dark, but fail to notice the light.  For me, that’s when this habit I’m trying to create of practicing gratitude delivers the biggest reward.

So for today, I’m grateful for blue skies and sunshine and meaningful work and good friends and new opportunities.  I’m grateful I am paying attention.  I’m grateful I am noticing the good stuff, not just the bad.  I have what I need, which is much more than most though maybe not everything that I might desire.  I have health and hope and choices.  My world today is full of possibility.  So I’ll recognize that today more things are going right for me than are going wrong.  It’s just that simple.

Today I celebrate.  Tomorrow is promised to no one.
