Grateful Learner

I’ve just realized how many important life lessons I’m still learning.

As a new(ish) commuter, especially one dependent on public transit, I had the chance to learn that I can’t doddle. I need to leave when I need to leave or else I’ll miss my Baby Bullet home, like I did yesterday.  The good news is there is almost always another train and I got a sandwich for the ride so I won’t expire on the way.   Plus, I got a seat which I can see is going to be a real challenge going forward.  Anyway, lesson learned.  That wasn’t too painful.

Now, I know I was on my high horse last week about people stuck on their phones, but funny how my take on that has softened as time goes by. I got several texts and emails as well as two phone calls from my sister while in transit. Man, I am grateful for these technological marvels we call smartphones. Seriously, I take back everything I said. But I’m still trying to look up and smile enough to connect with other humans. What can I say, I’m a work in progress.

New books, new people, new projects, new challenges.  This ole girl ain’t to old to learn new tricks.  I’m so grateful.

And on a final happy note, I saw that the new Rhodes Scholars were announced yesterday.  On merit alone, the group of 32 scholars is more than half women and has the largest number of African Americans ever.  Included in the winners are two Muslim immigrants and the child of illegal immigrants from Mexico.  This is who will lead us into the future and it looks bright!
